Membership and Coverage
11 June 2011As at 31 March 2011, the number of insured persons with hospital cover was 10,168,294, and the number of insured persons with general treatment cover was 11,788,252. A total of 11,807,553 persons held some form of private health insurance.
The proportion of the Australian population with hospital cover was 45.0%, with 52.2% of the Australian population having general treatment cover, and overall private health insurance coverage of the Australian population being 52.3%.

Proportion of the population insured
- The number of insured persons increased from the previous quarter from 11,733,719 to 11,807,553 (+0.6%) for all cover, increased from 10,117,552 to 10,168,294 (+0.5%) for hospital cover, and increased from 11,714,628 to 11,788,252 (+0.6%) for general treatment cover during the same period.

Age of Insured Persons
- The number of insured persons aged over 65 was 1.5 million representing 14.6% of the insured population, and 56.9% of the Australian population aged over 65. This was an increase from the previous quarter of 17,147 insured persons.
- As at March 2011, 910,502 insured persons were paying a Lifetime Health Cover loading, an increase from December 2010 of 1.9%.
- The average age of insured persons with hospital cover was 40.3. For insured persons with general treatment cover, the average age was 38.4.
- The age cohort with the greatest annual increase in insured persons was those aged 85-89, with an increase of 7.7%. The age cohort with the lowest annual increase was those aged 45-49, with a decrease of 0.5%.Membership across all age cohorts, with the exception of those aged 45-49 increased in the year ending March 2011 when compared to the year ending March 2010.
