Private Health Insurance Membership – Sept 2011

As at 30 September 2011, PHIAC Quarterly Report showed that a total of 12,024,482 persons held some form of private health insurance with the overall private health insurance coverage of the Australian population being 52.9%.

The number of insured persons with hospital cover was 10,353,096, and the proportion of the Australian population with hospital cover was 45.6%.

The number of insured persons with general treatment cover was 12,009,358, which is 52.9% of the Australian population having general treatment cover.

Selected statistics from the Private Health Insurance Industry Statistics for Sept 2011 is presented below.

For the quarter ending 30 September 2011:

  • The number of insured persons increased from the previous quarter from 11,901,915 to 12,024,482 (+1.0%) for all cover, increased from 10,255,675 to 10,353,096 (+0.9%) for hospital cover, and increased from 11,888,197 to 12,009,358 (+1.0%) for general treatment cover during the same period.
  • The proportion of the Australian population with private health insurance increased to 52.9% for the quarter ending 30 September 2011. The proportion of the population with hospital cover increased by 0.3% to 45.6%, and the proportion of the population with general treatment cover increased to 52.9% during the same period.
  • The number of insured persons aged over 65 was 1.52 million representing 14.7% of the insured population, and 48.2% of the Australian population aged over 65. This was an increase from the previous quarter of 26,773 insured persons.
  • As at September 2011, 977,117 insured persons were paying a Lifetime Health Cover loading, an increase from June 2011 of 2.9%.
  • The average age of insured persons with hospital cover was 40.2. For insured persons with general treatment cover, the average age was 38.4.
  • The age cohort with the greatest annual increase in insured persons was those aged 85-89, with an increase of 8.5%. The age cohort with the lowest annual increase was those aged 35-39, with an increase of 0.4%.
  • Membership across all age cohorts, with the exception of those aged 45-49 increased in the year ending September 2011 when compared to the year ending September 2010.

I am married and have two children, a boy of 18 and a girl of 16. I am going to migrate with my family. Therefore I seek for a family cover. Please assist me in this regard.
